Event organiser and 1974 student, Keri McInerney said about 100 people participated in the activities over the course of the weekend.
“The weekend was an outstanding success. It was incredibly well-received by everybody. I’ve had everybody so appreciative of what we’ve done,” Ms McInerney said. After a cocktail night on Friday at the Empire Hotel, Saturday saw the group convene at the high school for tours and a lunch put on by the P&C. Local poet Esther Gardiner gave the Welcome to Country and recited three poems. Macintyre principal, Lindsay Paul said the alumni were very interested to see how the school had changed, developed and the new facilities.
“Plus where they might have hung out, and things they might have got up to in different paces,” he chuckled.
School Aboriginal Edu-cation Officer, Leanne Cochrane started at Macintyre in 1984. She attended all the events and said most of the old students were from the earlier years, but she still enjoyed the day. As a past student, she said times had changed from when she sat behind a desk 20 years ago.
“We’ve got Aboriginal Studies here, where we didn’t have that when I was going to school,” she said. More change is doubtless ahead for the school, and Ms McInerney said there will be another chance to see it unfold.
“We’re looking forward to the 50th for an equally successful event again. We’re now planning for that!”
