On Monday, two elderly locals reported receiving a phone call purporting to be from the council. The caller attempted to elicit bank details and told the residents they owed the council $90. They were reportedly aggressive in manner.
Council manager for integrated planning and reporting Fiona Adams said the council would never ask for bank details over the phone. She said in most circumstances, residents are contacted through a more traditional manner such as the post, bearing the official letterhead.
If locals are unsure of any communication from the council, they are invited to visit the council administration office on Otho Street to confirm the origin.
Residents who receive scam phone calls are urged to contact local police on 6722 0599 or visit the Scamwatch website to report the incident to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
