Inverell Theatre Company embraced the ridiculous in their first performances of four comedic pieces, which continue this Thursday and Saturday.

Kicking off with absurdist play The Bald Prima Donna, Peter Caddey and Amy Bird transformed into Mr and Mrs Smith with ease, pairing awkward silences and mundane conversations with almost homicidal arguments.

The audience’s unsure giggles soon transformed into laughter as Lachlan McDonald and Emma McIlwain entered the scene as the forgetful Mr and Mrs Martin, who – despite realising they slept in the same bed in the same house – couldn’t remember how they knew each other. Eboni Luxford and Jack Staader joined in the fun as a detective/maid and fire chief looking for more fires to fight. 

The silliness continued in Trouble in the Cellar, a pantomime telling the tale of a star crossed plumber and his lover as they face disapproving parents and a violent robber. Narrated by Jade Bradley, the group took turns showing off their miming skills as they walked up and down the non-existent cellar stairs. 

Mark Wisemantle and Pat Sloman paired up in Dinner for One, a comedy of errors in which a dedicated butler attempts to fill in for several guests to Miss Sophie’s 90^th birthday party, including drinking all of their alcohol. 

Local names and double entendre kept the audience rolling in Last Tango in Beaulieu, the story of a struggling amateur theatre group putting on the play of a lifetime. 

“It’s very close to home to us,” director and actor Jade Bradley said. She loved the intimate setting of the Beaulieu Theatre.  “You can see all the audience the whole way to the back, and all these familiar faces. You really get to take in everyone’s vibe when you’re up there and how much they’re enjoying it,” she said. Tickets are on sale at Tourism Inverell.
