The Inverell under 10s Junior Highlanders attended the NIAS National Primary Games 2017 Rugby Carnival over April 8-9, and the local team of 14 contested a seven-a-side competition.
After six rounds, they finished third in their pool on Saturday. They returned with gusto on Sunday morning, and played two finals, completing the weekend with an overall fourth place.
Coach Rob Sides said his young side were very enthusiastic.
“I think for the first hit-out they performed exceptionally well and all the parents who were there were astounded by the quality of the football that was played,” he said.
Rob stressed his goals for the team were both skills-building and having fun, which kept them coming back, and hoped they understood what they accomplished.
“I want them to feel as though something they achieved was something significant,” he said.
Inverell player of the tournament was 10-year-old Jock Sides.
Inverell junior rugby will play its first April 30 and the club welcomes new registrations for the under 6-under 14 teams. Contact Tim Lloyd on 0429 318 096 for more information.
