The move comes after Tenterfield Shire Council issued an invitation to all councils with an interest in the Bruxner highway, to form a committee to “engage” state and federal politicians for support.
A report prepared for Inverell Shire Council councillors by General Manager, Paul Henry, said Tenterfield proposed the idea after they teamed with four other local councils to successfully lobby for $24 million to upgrade sections of the Mt Lindesay Road.
According to the report, the Bruxner committee would lobby for funds to upgrade the full length of the road.
Cr Stewart Berryman supported the proposal describing the Bruxner as “a pretty important road for our shire” while Yetman-based councilor, Kate Dight, said “it is a critical road for us”.
Other potential members of the Bruxner committee are the Moree Plains, Gwydir and Clarence Valley councils.
Inverell councillor’s passed a motion expressing in-principle support for joining the alliance, and requested more details on its planned operations and possible costs.
Cr Kate Dight was nominated as the potential representative for Inverell.
