There will be mud! There will be sweat! But thanks to stringent risk assessments, the challenges will stop short of blood at this year’s Toughen Up Challenge to be held on March 10, 2018. At least that seemed to be the plan of the nine organisers who regularly meet before work at Bikes on Byron (at an ungodly hour, I might add).

Between sips of cappuccino, they spoke of challenges aimed at outwitting participants – physically and mentally. Inspired by their own childhood adventures and travels to the Kokoda trail, there was no end to the ideas that these parents and professionals could drum up.
They swore me to secrecy regarding the mystery obstacle course – more exhausting than any before. But I can reveal that there will be a water slide, lots of rope, treks through drains, slippery crossings and spectacular action-packed fun.
But will that be enough to draw youth? Strangely enough, despite the success of shows like “Survivor”, the teen set is hard to get away from technology and onto the Toughen Up challenge battlefield.
A brainstorming session ensues. “Why not offer an iPhone as a prize?” suggests one of the organisers. “How about free Wifi at the event?” Telstra, are you listening? You should be!
The success of the event, and its meticulous planning by organisers has guaranteed corporate interest. Planned with military precision, it’s easy to see why Toughen Up Challenges have been so successful in Inverell.
One by one, organisers examine sponsorship requests from who will offer t-shirts to Windsong’s interest in aligning its Ultimate Kokoda Adventure with the Toughen Up mentality.
The more local sponsors, the more exciting the event will be. It’s a win-win situation for sponsors, organisers, participants and the community at large as benefits from the event will be donated to Inverell Lions Club and Inverell Community Gardens
While many of the events are being fine-tuned, tickets are already available for this year’s challenge. Early bird prices are set until December 31 at $80 (adults), $60 (youth) and $25 (juniors). People can participate in teams of four, but can also be placed in teams.
