It won’t only be the trainers preparing for the carnival events with Inverell Jockey Club confirming over $5,000.00 in prizes will be available for the REX Airlines Fashions in the Field competitions on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day with lots of categories on both days to give all contestants a chance to share the prizes.
At Tamworth Dean Smith and Diggers’ Cup winner Devlann made it two in a row with an impressive 3 length win in the 1600m handicap at odds of $5.50. Devlann is now fulfilling the potential shown earlier in his career and looks to be a stayer in the making. A return to the Inverell 1600m in the Stewarts Grain BM65 on New Year’s day looks a perfect step to longer races in the new year for the son of 2006 Inverell Cup winner Excellent Ann.
Bonnie Sare trained by Allan Foran won the final race at Tamworth first up from a 14 week spell and again showed her liking for a wet track as 3 of her 4 wins have been on rain affected tracks. Bonnie Sare started at odds of $3.40 reflecting some strong stable support in the betting ring and was another win for comeback jockey Danny Edmonds.
Foran was “over the moon” with the win and rated Edmonds’ ride a perfect 10 allowing the mare to settle at the rear of the small field early before gradually improving to be close to the leading bunch on the turn and drawing clear in the run down the straight.
The 1400m of the XXXX Gold Inverell Cup looks an option for Foran as the mare will be on the minimum weight and although facing a big rise in class, a cup winner would be a dream come true for the proverbial “battling” owner trainer with only four horses in work.
The winners continued after the last at Tamworth as Todd Payne produced an unraced 3 year old “Swiglars” owned by locals Rohan Butler and Dick Gleeson in the barrier trial which led all the way to win in good fashion. Payne had a place getter earlier in the day with Kalahari Pearl running third in the 1200m Maiden.
Payne continues to lead the Group One Feeds Inverell Trainers premiership with the progressive points to 5th December being:
Todd Payne 62, Dean Smith 56, Bill Perrett 29, Al Foran 26, Shane Edmonds 24.
At Tamworth on Monday racing stewards completed the enquiry into the cause of the tragic fall at Warialda in April which resulted in the death of Darren Jones and serious injuries to Melanie Bolwell and Leanne Henry. The fall was not the fault of any jockey, nor was the Warialda track a factor in the fall which was found to have been caused when the horse Darren Jones was riding clipped the hells of another horse.
