As Christmas shopping ramps up, locals visiting Target are invited to set aside $1 to give joy to families who might otherwise miss out.

“What Christmas does, it either shows you what you’ve got or what you haven’t got,” Reverend Jean Bell said.

A joint initiative between the store and UnitingCare Australia, shoppers can purchase a $1 bauble tag or donate a gift towards the Christmas appeal. The funds donated will go directly towards creating hampers for local families doing it tough.

“Last year seven families got $130-150 worth of hamper each,” Reverend Bell said. She said along with hams donated by Bindaree Beef, the hampers were made up of practical items to last past Christmas day.

Delivering most of the food herself, Reverend Bell said it was “very heartwarming,” and clear that the supplies were much needed.

“I think people are very generous when it comes to this time of year,” store manager Matthew Glasson said.

Target hopes to take a step up from last year’s national effort of $1.2 million and 37, 187 gifts donated. Locals can donate until December 24.
