The It Starts with You! program, a 12 month initiative led by Inverell Shire Council, will offer a series of free events, skill building workshops and school holiday programs and help connect young people with local opportunities.
The program will tee off with a free kayaking paddle at Lake Inverell on Wednesday, 24 January and registrations for the event are now open.
Mayor Paul Harmon says Council recognises many families are on the look out for free activities in the holidays and the price of many entertainment options can place a strain on the household budget.
“We’ve heard from community members, mums and dads who have asked for more activities for youth and greater options for families during school holidays”.
“At the same time, we know there’s many clubs and organisations keen to engage young people and we’re delighted Council can provide a platform for connecting young people with these opportunities”, Cr Harmon added.
“Council secured a grant under the NSW Government’s Youth Opportunities Program, which enables us to roll out these free events over the next 12 months”.
“The upcoming kayaking event is the first of these activities and will be led by Joey’s Adventure Tours”.
Participants are asked to register with Inverell Shire Council ahead of the day, with a safety vest, kayak and snacks provided to all signing on.
“Lake Inverell is a terrific location for the event and the twilight paddle will enable participants to enjoy the Lake at a cooler time of day”.
Cr Harmon indicated all events under the It Starts with You! program are open to Inverell Shire youth aged 12-20 years.
“We’re in the process of developing a full event calendar, which will include everything from designing and painting murals to first aid workshops, fun runs, skateboarding sessions, and computer building courses”.
Further details will be shared on Council’s website www.inverell.nsw.gov.au and www.facebook.com/InverellCouncil. Register for the kayaking event by calling Council on 67288288.
