The plan includes the removal of several plane trees and the building of a median strip, and building is estimated to continue for 15 weeks.
Beginning with a section of Otho Street between Byron and Evans Street, initial works on the raised pedestrian crossing are expected to take three weeks.
RELATED STORY:
During that time, normal parking will be available on both sides of the street, apart from the construction site. Traffic will be permitted to enter Otho Street from either Byron or Evans Street and perform a u-turn to exit the same way they came.
After the pedestrian crossing, work will begin on the median strip, which is expected to take 12 weeks.
During this period, the northern lane will be closed to traffic for the entire length of the block. The southern lane will be accessible. Cars will be able to enter Otho via Evans Street and exit via Byron. The usual angle parking will be replaced with parallel parking during this period of construction.
The council adopted the Town Centre Renewal Plan in 2014, and said that the focus is on creating an attractive CBD for visitors and businesses.
