Head steward Anthony King said it was an event for all, and exciting for spectators and competitors alike.
“I think it’s going to be good for all the families. Bring the kids along and they can all watch - it’s something they don’t see everyday,” he said.
With prizes ranging from $20 to $200, entrants will range from professionals to first-timers. Entry in the maiden, local and novice events are $5, with the open costing $7.
King said the open would display how thoroughly man’s best friend can be trained, while the local was a chance for Inverell Shire farmers to challenge each other.
“It’s a good thing too, for boys to bring dogs that haven’t had a go,” he said. He said judges often give pointers to new competitors.
“It’s always a good way to christen the dog. Bring it and give it a little run,” King said.
Woodchop steward Jono Elphick said many don’t realise how well-trained farm dogs are. He said that with the sounds of rides and whip cracking from the campdraft, entrants would have to work hard to keep their dogs focused.
“So many factors go into it. It depends on the sheep - if they’re pretty weak, if they’re educated pretty well. You can go to one trial one week and that might suit your dog, but the next week, they might be really strong,” he said.
“It’ll be really good to have it back here and get everyone to come and give a bit of feedback.”
King said he hopes to see dog trials continue to grow in the region.
