The Air Cadet Squadron has a long history in the Inverell and district community.
The squadron Executive Officer, Pilot Officer (AAFC) Donna McWhirter said the 319 squadron (originally 19 Flight) has been active in Inverell since the 1960s, making a contribution to the youth of Inverell for over 50 years.
Ms McWhirter said the Australian Air Force Cadets is an organisation focused on providing many fantastic experiences to cadets including powered flying, gliding, field exercises, adventure training, drill and ceremonial and firearms experiences.
She said cadets also teach valuable life skills and develops qualities such as leadership, self-reliance, confidence, team work and communication.
The squadron commander Pilot Officer (AAFC) Ian McWhirter said the squadron is looking for new recruits this term, and has organised an open day on Sunday February 11.
Held between 10am and 2pm, the open day is for interested young people and their parents to come along and get a view of and participate in the cadet experience.
Anyone who is interested, but unavailable on Sunday is also invited to an open parade night on Monday February 12 between 5.30pm and 8pm.
The cost to join is $25 per school term and the Air Force supplies the cadets’ dress and camouflage uniforms for free. The Air Force also supplies transport and accommodation to wing-sponsored events including competitions and promotion courses.
Ms McWhirter said this made the Air Cadets a very cost effective option compared to similar organisations such as the scouts.
“I joined cadets mid 2016 and within a few months I was flying a plane and had plenty of new friends from this region,” Cadet Corporal Jada Daemon said.
“Within a year I was on a RAAF base training to be promoted up the rank chain with three of my closest friends! The AAFC is an amazing experience perfect for young people and people who are looking for new interests and hobbies, or just want to do something new.
“So if you are 13 – 18 years old come along and check us out. You won’t be disappointed.”
