Police said a 24-year-old man was driving a Holden Commodore north on Bannockburn Road with three passengers, when it crashed at approximately 2.35am.
Witnesses told police the vehicle left the road and struck a tree about 160 metres from the Ring Street intersection.
The tree sheared off from the impact while the Holden Commodore suffered extensive damage.
The 24-year-old man, driving the car, was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene a short time later.
The 23-year-old male front seat passenger had his right leg amputated below the knee.
He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, and a spokesperson from Hunter New England Health told The Inverell Times that he was in a critical condition.
The rear seat passengers were also injured. A 24-year-old man suffered a suspected broken shoulder and a 27-year-old man escaped with minor injuries.
Police from New England Police District established a crime scene which will be examined by forensic officers, and the vehicle has been seized for mechanical examination.
Investigators continue with their inquiries and will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner outlining the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
