The work, titled “Reverie”, was Saturday night’s big winner at the Inverell Art Gallery, made special by its sheer simplicity, innocence and minimalism. But former Inverell Times editor Michele Jedlicka seemed surprised when she scooped the Grand Champion Award. She was “chuffed, shocked and gratified.”
“It is nice for someone to recognise my work and to appreciate the same things in the photo that I saw,” Jedlicka said of the work that stood out among more than 190 entrants.
Glenn-Innes based photographer Stephen Wright, who judged the competition, was drawn by the little dancer’s “humanity of expression” and the “tangible emotion” drawn by her face and tingling through her poised body in a moment of “reverie”.
Other winners on the night included: Mandy Stoddart’s “Lambs” (Open Section); Helena South’s “Inverell Art Gallery” (Local Subject); Anthony Dale’s “Oh Captain my Captain” (People and Portrait); James Russell’s “Livery Barn” (Landscape); Stacey Wilkinson’s “Dungay Longhorn” (Wildlife); Mayin Chan’s “Fern IV”; Anthony Dale’s “Flat to the Board”; Brooke Fenton’s “Church of Spilled Blood” (Teen); Todd Fenton’s “Copeton Yella” (Junior)
Inverell Mayor Paul Harmon opened the exhibition that was organised by Kathryn Rourke. On May 10, the People’s Choice will be given.
