Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall told the Inverell Times this week the police station revamp was high on his agenda.
“That station is now almost 60 years old, built in a time were Inverell was half the population it is now, wasn’t a 24/7 station and only had 12 officers based there.”
Fast forward to today, Mr Marshall said police were “overflowing” out of the building.
“We have almost 50 police officers working out of a space built for 12, 24 hours of the day, there’s only one interview room and the evidence room is far too small.”
He said there was no female locker room and the station itself was falling apart with plumbing and roof issues.
The MP’s plan of action was to continue to simply put the strong case forward proving the need for a revamp.
“People have to walk past sensitive information to even make a statement which can be quite dangerous.
“It’s simply not satisfactory for modern day policing.”
Mr Marshall estimated the revamp costs to be between $15-20 million.
Inverell is one of three 24-hour stations in the area, joining Moree and Armidale.
