Local photographer and former Inverell Times editor Michèle Jedlicka was thrilled with the win. She thanked the many gallery visitors who voted for her snap.
“I love this photo,” she said. The image depicts Leanne Cochrane as she daubs her granddaughter’s face with ochre.
“I took this during the 2017 ceremony to repatriate the remains of the Aboriginal man who was once King of Bingara along the Gwydir River. It was a humbling and rare experience to be there.”
Michèle said she took a number a photos of the moment, but this one stood out.
“I loved this one with the tender touch between the ages, the significance of the event, and the waiting hand,” she said. She thanked Leanne for allowing her to share the moment.
“It’s a beautiful photo,” gallery supervisor Jo Williams said.
“I think the people’s choice award is always really special, because it’s nice to see what the community likes, what appeals to them.”
Michèle also took out the Grand Champion prize in March, for her striking shot of a young ballerina on the stage.
The photography exhibition has wrapped up, and replaced with the Regional Educators Exhibition, which opens from 6.30pm tonight, Friday, May 18.
