Facing tough competition, the Inverell Women’s Bowling Club fought their way to victory in the region three play-offs – just half a point ahead of North Tamworth Women’s in a nail biting finish.

Last year the local players were in the number four’s pennant team, and won the region three play-offs before travelling to the Central Coast for the state pennants fours play-offs, where they had some wins.

This year, the team was put up to play in the number three pennant teams.

“Going up a grade, they weren’t sure what their opposition would be,” team manager Robyn Brown said.

As there were no other number threes in the East Gwydir District, their first games this year were the play-offs, which were held at Moree Ex-Services Bowling club on Tuesday May, 29 and Wednesday, May 30.

The locals had a rough start on the Tuesday, losing to the Armidale Ex-Services Women's but by the afternoon in round two they had regained ground, with a win against North Tamworth Women's.

On the Wednesday morning in round three, Inverell had the bye, and North Tamworth had a win over Armidale Ex-Services.

After round three, Inverell, Armidale and North Tamworth had each recorded one win. Inverell Women's scraped through with a victory with a score of 5 ½, just ahead of North Tamworth on 5 points and Armidale Ex-Services at 4 ½ points.

“It wasn’t until the last bowl (that we knew who won),” Brown said.

“We were standing there looking at the scores on the scoreboard and they had them the wrong way around!”

Inverell Women's Club will now travel to the central coast for the pennants state play-offs in division three in August.

Managed by Robyn Brown, the players included Mauryeen Kennedy, Patricia Brooks, Beryle Woodham, Rhonda Hutton, Jane Leader, Belinda Emerson, Audrey Cook and Rhonda O'Neill.
