The plane was carrying a pilot and two passengers when it attempted to land at approximately 5.50pm. 

Police say an apparent pilot error caused the plane to overshoot the runway, where it collided with the cyclone wire fence that surrounds the area. The pilot and passengers were uninjured. 

The plane was travelling at a low speed of approximately 20 kilometres an hour when the incident occurred. The propeller was reportedly wrapped around the security fencing. 

NSW police, the rural fire service and representatives from the Inverell Shire Council all attended the scene. The air traffic safety bureau was alerted, but did not attend. 

The council’s airport reporting officer performed initial repairs to the damaged fence, installing stays. The council has hired a contractor to complete the repairs, which the general manager Paul Henry said would amount to “several thousands of dollars”. 

The repairs are expected to be completed within a few days, and patrols are continuing to keep animals off the runway. Local flights are unaffected.
