NORTHERN Tablelands MP Adam Marshall says residents across the region will share in a record NSW Government spend on mental health in yesterday’s 2018-19 State Budget, promising more mental health workers, strengthened community care and upgrades to mental health infrastructure.

Mr Marshall said the $2.1 billion investment would ensure vital mental health services reach those in need in the Northern Tablelands, particularly in suicide prevention initiatives.
Mr Marshall said local health districts across NSW would be invited to submit projects for funding under a $20 million capital investment program for priority mental health and he would be speaking with local health professionals to identify suitable local projects.
“We also have the opportunity to take part in more detailed investigations to prioritise acute mental health units requiring more substantial physical upgrades as part of the wider $700 million program of capital works to support the reform of the NSW mental health system,” Mr Marshall said.
“One of the key initiatives is $3 million to support suicide prevention initiatives in some areas where we are facing mental health challenges unique to others, and that applies to this electorate, especially in relation to young people, to the elderly and disadvantaged, and to indigenous communities.
“We have some incredible support groups and professionals working across this electorate and I will be working with them to target projects to improve frontline services for the vulnerable members of our communities.
“There is money in this Budget for additional community-based mental health services and supports and we would want to see regional funding to enhance what we do already.
“We are all committed to delivering better care and support to improve the lives of those living with mental illness.”
