One of 800 riders taking on the North Star Trail Ride, organiser Jeff Nixon said the man appeared to tumble over the handlebars after losing control of the vehicle due to wobbling at a high speed, known as a ‘tank slapper’ crash.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene, where they treated the man before transporting him to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital with multiple injuries.

Mr Nixon said six or seven St John’s Ambulance vehicles were on site throughout the weekend as a precaution, and that up to four competitors were transferred to hospital during the event.

“We prepare as best we can,” he said. He said there were safety markings along the track, along with several support vehicles and experienced riders. He said organisers had limited entries to under 1000 riders this year to avoid overcrowding on the dusty track.

“Sunday was a riskier day as people were a bit tireder,” Mr Nixon said.

“We hope he’s alright.”
