Nuns, astronauts and burlesque dancers shared the stage with a disobedient school girl and a villainous doctor last month for the Inverell Theatre Company’s latest energetic production.

The cast of quirky characters will return to the Beaulieu Theatre from Thursday night, determined to keep audiences rolling in the aisles for the final three performances of Dogsbreath Devereaux – The Dastardly Doctor and Marmalade Atkins in Space.

“They were very well received. They were very funny,” Marmalade Atkins director Narelle Kennedy said.

“For the second play they laughed from beginning to end, because it’s very visual, very corny, quite funny.”

Following the story a young troublemaker sent to space in an attempt to change her behaviour, Ms Kennedy said Marmalade Atkins has remained fresh and fun for the cast and crew.

“We’ve seen it over and over and over again, and every production we just laugh all the time,” she said.

Overcoming the challenges of local theatre with inventive lighting cues and effective costumes, she said the energetic actors helped bring the pieces to life.

“Our cast is actually aged from about 14 to nearly 70. That’s a big range of age groups. We get along quite well. We have a lot of laughs and I think the kids are growing with the experience. And it’s good for the theatre company as well,” she said.

“They’re quite versatile.”

Dogsbreath Devereaux is the story of a gold-digging doctor, played by Peter Caddey, and the lengths he will go to to marry the ultra rich and fairly naive Lotta Cash (Fiona Brown).

Posh: Katrina Richardson and Peter Caddey play Marmalade Atkins' parents, who believe that sending their naughty daughter into space will change her ways.

The two melodramas will run at the Beaulieu Theatre from 7.30pm this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $25 a head, $20 for concession, and are available at Tourism Inverell.

“I just hope that people come and see it because it’s really worthwhile,” Ms Kennedy said.

“We should be supporting culture in Inverell, because you don’t get a lot of opportunity to see live theatre. It’s good quality stuff.”
