A NSW Government grant will fund a Grandparents Day afternoon tea to show gratitude for local grandparents.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall recently announced that Inverell Shire Council has received $6,507 to bring Grandparents Day to life with a Superhero themed afternoon tea on Sunday, October 28 at Inverell Town Hall.
“Grandparents Day is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to the seniors in our community, Mr Marshall said.
“Council is offering a great way to give back with a free family event at Inverell Town Hall complete with a visit from Spiderman, Wonder Woman and Captain America.”
He said he hoped to see locals young and old enjoy the day.
“I encourage everyone to bring their grandparents or the older people in their lives along to the Superhero Afternoon Tea,” he said.
Inverell Shire mayor Paul Harmon said the free event will celebrate older people and grandparents by offering a free afternoon tea prepared by local high school students, a display from Nick King’s martial arts academy, a photo booth and an acrobatic superhero stage show.
“Grandparents Day in Inverell Shire has been increasing in popularity year by year and last year’s event was booked out. We’re delighted to receive funding for the event next month,” Cr Harmon said.
NSW Grandparents Day celebrates the role grandparents and older people play in communities across NSW, and is held annually on the last Sunday in October. The day was launched by the NSW Government in 2011.
Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies said that more than $200,000 has been delivered to councils, schools and community organisations to hold Grandparents Day celebrations this October.
“Grandparents Day gives us a chance to recognise the older people in our lives for the invaluable contributions they make to their families and communities,” Mrs Davies said.
Last year, the NSW Government doubled the amount of funding available to organisations so they could deliver a diverse range of events that reach more people.
This year NSW Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Sunday, October 28, while the NSW Grandparent of the Year Awards will be presented at a ceremony on October 24.
The Inverell Grandparents Day event will be held on Sunday, October 28 from 2pm –4pm at the Inverell Town Hall. Bookings are essential to the council on 6728 8288.
