Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall announced that the community will see the new station earlier than anticipated on Monday, with the project currently four months ahead of its initial timeline.
“This has been a long held dream of local police, the council and community for around three to four years now, and I’m absolutely delighted that we’re going to see action on this site before Christmas this year, and not have to wait until April or May next year to get that construction underway,” Mr Marshall said.
“I can’t wait to see that first sod of soil turned, when we’ll see construction get away on brand new police station to accommodate our growing numbers of local police and to keep this community safe.”
He has been campaigning for the knockdown and rebuild of the station since 2015.
The project is still in the planning stage, with consultation between the NSW Police Properties unit and local police expected in the next few weeks. Mr Marshall said the consultation will ensure the design not only meets current demands, but “will serve this community well for another four to five decades”.
A temporary location for Inverell police during construction has not yet been chosen, but Mr Marshall assured the issue was “very close” to being resolved.
An existing government building and the former Roads and Maritime Services registry on Campbell Street are both being considered.
