Elders Olympics
On Thursday, September 13, I was a visitor to Mungindi Elders Olympics held at Mungindi. Teams represented by Moree (two), Saint George and Mungindi created a wonderful day for about 300 people.I was told that a number of invitations had been sent to towns some time ago to enter a team. With a large number of ageing people in Inverell, I was surprised that Inverell did not have a team.

The games over the day were great fun.
There was nothing strenuous, there was camaraderie, and it was an alcohol-free event. It was well catered for with food, coffee and tea.The games next year will be held in Saint George and it would be great for Inverell to enter a team.

Local environment plan
Dear residents of Inverell,
We have just heard that your council has approved an amendment to your local environment plan to allow water mining – the extraction of 100 million litres of groundwater per year to transport away for bottling.
Don’t allow this to happen.
Our area – which is far wetter than yours – has become the water mining capital of the country because Council amended the LEP in 2016 and allowed big corporate interests like Coca Cola to take over water.
Creeks are running dry. Conflicts are numerous. Unlawful behaviour is epidemic. Road damage enormous – and ratepayers have to subsidise it. There is no revenue for local council, just costs. And you as residents who rely on water will have far fewer rights.
When Council says the Office of Water says it’s fine, there’s plenty of water, don’t believe them, they haven’t done the science. When they say operators will be regulated and if water depletion is occurring, they’ll stop pumping, don’t believe them. They never stop.
This is an industry that is lose lose for a local area. Unfortunately, we know this too well for all the wrong reasons.
