RELATED STORY: Strong scores in 2018 Veterans Week of Golf
Men and lady golfers from Bargara in Queensland to Wodonga in Victoria journeyed to Inverell and stayed for the week to play in the tournament and didn’t Inverell turn it on.
The weather was perfect on Monday and Tuesday and the players managed to complete play on Thursday and Friday before the much-needed rain fell. Although the course showed we have been in drought, the visitors were full of praise for the quality of the greens and course management.
The organising committee could not be any happier with the week, nor could the visitors, and this was evident at the presentation dinner where the Australian Café catered a plenty for 100 people and Sara Wade, representing Mclean Care, presented the daily winners with their trophies.
A special presentation was also made to the local CWA branch. NSWVGA representative, Peter Taylor and Inverell Veteran Golf president, John Tom, presented the branch with a cheque for $1000, from NSW Veterans Golf, for drought relief.
“A couple visiting for the first time stated, ‘What a great town! We are blown away by the towns presentation and friendliness,’” tournament director Jim Shadlow said.
Many of the visiting golfers spent Wednesday touring the area and shopping.
Response from local business houses to sponsor the event was tremendous. The visitors were outspoken in their praise for the tournament and town and vowed to return when a similar event is staged in April next year.
