Awarded each year on Australia Day, the awards recognise the contribution of volunteers to the community, young people making a difference and also the shire’s exceptional events.
Last year’s awards ceremony in Victoria Park attracted an audience of close to 800, with Australia Day ambassador Paul Featherstone awarding the citizen of the year to Chris Richter, young citizen of the year to Amber Dennis and the centenary celebrations of Inverell Swimming Club was named event of the year.
Inverell Shire Council mayor Paul Harmon believes there are many selfless people in the community who give up their time for local charities, service clubs, fundraisers, activities and sporting organisations.
“Now is the time to have a think about who in our community deserves recognition and a well-earned pat on the back for what they do”.
“Many of these individuals do so without expecting recognition for their work and do what they do because they love giving back to the community”.
“The event of the year award recognises committees and volunteers behind the shire’s festivals, community days and celebrations. Over the last twelve months, we have seen some fantastic events across the shire which would be very worthy of an award such as this”.
Cr Harmon encouraged residents to put forward their nominations before the end of November.
“This year, the Australia Day Committee has streamlined the nomination form to make nominating a little easier and forms are now available online at the Council website”.
“We have just increased the age limit for the young citizen of the year award, which is now open to residents of the shire aged 20 years and under”.
“The committee will shortly vote for our preferred Australia Day ambassador, so we look forward to being able to announce the identity of our 2019 ambassador at the end of the year”.
Printed copies of the Inverell Shire Australia Day Awards nomination forms are also available at the library, Council Administration Centre and Tourism Inverell and nominations close on November 30, 2018.
Winners will be announced on Saturday, January 26, 2019 in Victoria Park.
