They had reason to be jubilant. Their parish has come a long way since 1868 when Father Francis McLaughlin, a 25-year-old Irish man, held mass at hotels or at the homes of parishioners.
These days it is housed in a state-of-the-art building, but the parish is more than just bricks and mortar and has grown to be a very special hub of Christianity filled with believers from all ethnicities and walks of life.
To celebrate its 150-year growth, the congregation celebrated with an anniversary picnic at Victoria Park. There were home-made dishes of every type, but it was mainly Filipino cuisine that dominated the dishes.
Beef soup, spaghetti mince, spring rolls, casava, puto were just some of the dishes.
The picnic was just one of many anniversary celebrations being organised by the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Inverell. Other events include a group vow renewal on Thursday morning, a celebration dinner on Saturday (tickets at $35), but there are also commemorative books tracing the parish’s amazing history ($20) and an exhibition showcasing the history of the parish at the church
The Sacred Heart Catholic Church is at 81 Vivian Street. Telephone 6722 1103 for more info about this event.
