The couples will renew their marriage vows as part of the Sacred Heart Parish 150th anniversary celebrations. With a wide range of ages and backgrounds, at least one couple has been together for over 60 years, while another, just months.
Father Roel Llave said whatever the length, the successful marriages were worth rejoicing, matching well with the anniversary theme ‘celebrate what we have been given’.
“They have been given to each other and they gave each other to each other,” he said.
“That is a cause for celebration, a cause for thanksgiving. We’ve been together for 60 years or even less, through thick and thin, through good times and bad times - and that is what marriage is all about.”
Father Llave said he always felt privileged to take part in weddings and remembers his first Inverell marriage ceremony clearly. One of the groomsmen – the bride’s brother – returned a year later to make the same commitment to his fiance.
“I always say marriage is not a bed of roses, but it is how you stick together and try to sort out things together that will eventually bring you to where they are now.”
Several priests from around the diocese are expected to attend the mass, which will be led by celebrant Bishop Michael Kennedy.
The church will continue to display a public exhibition which revisits special moments such as weddings, baptisms and confirmations this week.
