Ideal running conditions made this year’s Inverell Sapphire City River Run an event to remember on Sunday, October 14.

The competition kicked off from Campbell Park at 8.30am with the 9.2km run, followed shortly after by 4.6km run. The 9km contestants ran the path from Campbell Park along the river and then followed the Glen Innes Rd to Daryl Barnes Park at Lake Inverell and back, while the 4.6km group ran to Northey Park Lookout on Albion Hill and back.
Dylan Koppschall from Danthonia won the main event in a time of 33 minutes and 1 seconds while Nikko Siddons from North Star, returning to the Inverell run, was the first female runner finishing with a time of 35 minutes 10 seconds, eclipsing the previous record set by Sarah Schiffman by 24 seconds.
Last year’s winner and current record holder, Brendan Jones, coming back from injury was just 13 seconds behind Dylan and Inverell’s Emma McInnes ran a strong race to be second female home in 40 minutes 18 seconds.
In the 4.6 km event the winner was Matthew Campion from Glen Innes, who returned to make it back-to-back victories in a time of 16:28, well outside his previous record of 14:59.
Brooke Stainton from Armidale won the open female division in 21:02. Runners up were Jeremy Boller from Inverell in 16:46 and Charlie Smith in 21:23.
The best times for the 2.5km 12 years and under went to Max Cracknell from Inverell with a time of 9:53 and Brooke Newberry in the female division in 10:59 minutes.
The day was organised by Alistair Williams under the banner of Inverell East Rotary. He was supported by several volunteers and by sponsorship from many local companies and the Inverell Shire Council.
Proceeds from this years’ event will be donated to the CWA drought appeal and the Salvation Army.
