The play, Good With Maps, is a monologue performance delving into how we all cope as carers, whether it be for an ageing parent, child or parent with a disability or a family member who is terminally ill. It has been described by critics as a stunning, mature work by one of Australia’s most gifted and versatile writers. Sometimes sad and confronting; it is also funny and thoughtful, and celebrates the power of reading and literature to transport us to places both real and imagined.
The play’s plot is loosely woven around the writer’s trip to the Amazon, where she ponders the expanses and limits of human exploration. At the same time she struggles to deal with her father's journey through Parkinson's disease towards what is perhaps our last great unknown. If this makes Good with Maps sound grim, it’s not.
Yes, it’s sad and confronting in parts, but it’s also funny and thoughtful and celebrates the power of reading and literature to transport us to places both real and imagined. Writer, Noelle Janaczewska’s unfailing ability to ignite universal emotions and laughter in all of us while gloriously revealing her own exquisite uniqueness is one of this piece’s great joys.
The production company, Critical Stages, was formed in 2005 as an initiative of Darlinghurst Theatre. It has quickly grown to become Australia’s leading producer of touring theatre from the independent theatre sector. In the past eleven years the company has toured productions by some of the country’s leading theatre makers to regional and remote audiences across the country.
