While locals were commemorating the centenary of Armistice Day, on the other side of the world one of our Inverell Remembers street flags flew at Toronto Cemetery, south of Ypres and near Comines in Belgium, in honour of our district soldiers buried there.

They are George Cawkwell, John Worgan, John Hobbs, and Walter Morris, all of whom were among Inverell’s Kurrajong recruits.
With the co-operation of Mr Réal Desmarets in Belgium, several families have ‘adopted’ these soldiers’ graves and undertaken the responsibility of caring for them. Where possible the Belgian families have been put in contact with the Australian relatives of these men.
The Inverell Kurrajong Re-enactment Committee in conjunction with Inverell Shire Council provided information, gifts and the street flag which was used for this year’s adoption ceremony as well as on Remembrance Day.
Each year local school children visit the cemeteries in the Comines-Warneton area to learn about their country’s war history and the sacrifice made by so many.
The link between Inverell and this Belgian community is a special and respectful reminder of those who served and gave their lives during World War 1. Our boys are well and truly remembered.
