World War I veterans from more than 1700 NSW locations are honoured in the public artwork in Hyde Park, Sydney.
It displays soil samples from the Diggers’ home towns, including in and around Inverell, Gunnedah, Armidale, Moree and Glen Innes.
The new Hall of Service artwork was devised by Australian artist Fiona Hall and includes a soil sample and plaque for every town, suburb or locality WWI enlistees gave as their place of address.
The soil collection program, launched in March 2017, was a collaboration between DFSI Spatial Services, the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs, the Geographical Names Board of NSW, and local surveyors.
NSW Surveyor General Narelle Underwood said the project had uncovered great stories and had been “a terrific opportunity for our surveyors to get out and about in their local communities and build solid connections while working to honour our Diggers”.
