An RFS spokesman said the fire, which is believed to been sparked by a lightning strike, is being controlled, but is “not yet contained”. He assured that no properties are in danger.

Crews monitored the fire over night and this morning with aircraft, and are continuing to work on containment.

The fire is currently burning over an area of 36 hectares.

Firefighters undertook back burning and used bulldozers to create heavy containment lines yesterday.

The RFS is also continuing to monitor a fire near Stannifer on Old Mill Road, which was contained late yesterday afternoon. An RFS spokesman said crews will continue to monitor and control the fire throughout the day.

With a Fire Danger Rating of Very High in the Inverell, Glen Innes and Tenterfield local government areas, the RFS have declared a total fire ban today. A total fire ban means no fires can be lit in the open, and all fire permits are suspended.

This includes incinerators and barbecues which burn solid fuel, such as wood, charcoal or heat beads. No general purpose welding, grinding, soldering or gas cutting can be done in the open.
