During the next two weeks, book-lovers with outstanding fines can purchase bottled water to the value of their debt and take it down to the library.
Library manager Sonya Lange said upon exchange the fines will be waived, making the initiative a win-win for everyone.
“I heard about the bottled drive last week whilst doing my regular spot on the radio. I thought there might be a way for our patrons to help.
“We usually do food for fines with food donations going to a local charity but we were in the midst of changing our system at the library and were unable to run it so we thought this idea was a good substitute,” she said.
Bottled water donations will be accepted from now until February 23. However, Sonya hoped Bundarra’s water issue would be resolved prior.
“Pete said on the radio ‘you can’t get into heaven if you have overdue book fines’ now I don’t know how true that is but you wouldn’t want to risk it,” she said.
Residents without fines are also welcome to drop down water if they wish to help.
Uralla Shire Council marked Bundarra’s water supply as unsafe on January 18. Despite the council’s ongoing effort, in coordination with government agencies and water supply specialists, the required level of residual chlorine has not yet been sustained.
