Local parents Ben and Melinda Davis decided to organise an Inverell JDRF Charity Golf Day after their son James was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
"He was diagnosed at the age of four and we knew how hard it was for us when we first found out. We were thrown in the deep end and overwhelmed with information that changed our lives and his life forever," he said.
In a bid to make it easier for kids and families who will inevitably go through the same experience, the Davis family decided to call on the golfing community to raise awareness and money.
Inverell Golf Club will host the fully booked out four-person Ambrose event on Sunday with all 18-holes sponsored by generous local businesses.
There will also be a longest drive competition on the 10th hole for a male and female winner.
"At the moment there is just no cure at all. We want to bring more awareness to type 1 diabetes and get the conversation started. It's not easy but there is a lot of support out there once you start looking," Davis said.
JDRF has been part of every breakthrough in type 1 diabetes care in the last 40 years, driving innovation, demanding action and standing with everyone facing the diagnosis. The organisation believes research is key.
Davis said JDRF holds fundraisers, walks and camps for type 1 diabetes kids of certain ages which allows parents to unwind and find out more information.
"Their main focus is finding a cure, more so in kids and early detection. They need more support and that's what we're trying to do."
Due to the overwhelming support, the Inverell JDRF Charity Golf Day will become an annual event on the golfing calendar.
Those wishing to support fundraising efforts can head to the website www.give.everydayhero.com/au/inverell-jdrf-charity-golf-day.
On the everydayhero web page Davis wrote "Our son is an inspiration to us and our family. If we can help raise some money to help cure type 1 it would be the best gift we could ever give him.
"Please use this page if you would like to make a personal contribution. Every little bit counts towards a step forward in finding a cure for type 1 diabetes."
The charity golf day is fully booked out for the inaugural event, however registrations will re-open next year for those who don't want to miss out supporting the event.
"My wife and I realised there is support there so we're going to make it an annual thing. It's good for the golf club too so everyone's a winner."
