Inverell Art Gallery manager Jo Williams said the Inverell Art Prize was easily their biggest event for the year.
"We've got just under 300 entries this year from across three states which is very exciting. We have 11 different sections.
"The Inverell Art Prize is awarded to the overall winner and has $2000 prize money. It's judged from section one, our open section and section two, the local section."
Inverell Art Prize was a concept started by the art society pretty early on, according to Ms Williams, who thought it may be close to 50 years old.
Since its inception, the event has grown to become one of the biggest exhibitions in the area. Each year entry forms are sent out encouraging people from across Australia to get involved.
A special theme is chosen for the 'special feature' section each year. 'Peace and unity' was selected as Inverell Art Prize opens on International Day of Peace.
Art lovers far and wide are encourage to attend the opening on Saturday evening where the huge variety will be on display. Starting at 6.30pm at the art gallery, entry is $15 per person and the bar will be running.
Winners will be announced, however, People's Choice will stay open for the duration of the exhibition which finishes on November 9.
"We seem to have a lot of sculptures and metal work this year. On the opening night the Sapphire City Princesses and ambassador will be announced."
A special opening of the gallery will also take place on Sunday, September 22 from 10am until 1pm for those who want to view the exhibition.
