At an event in Tamworth on Tuesday evening, November 19, he was announced as the GP Synergy New England/Northwest Registrar of the Year.

The award presented by local GP training provider, GP Synergy, recognises excellence and ongoing commitment to quality general practice education and training.

After deciding to specialise as a GP, Dr Sumitomo is in his third and final year of training at Integral Health Armidale, having also completed a year of training in Inverell.

"My interest in becoming a GP began after spending a year at a GP clinic in the rural South Australian town of Murray Bridge during my medical school years," he said.

"This experience allowed me to work with some inspirational rural GPs practicing medicine and seeing them make a positive impact on their community on a regular basis.

"I felt general practice would be a good career option as it would allow me to be exposed to a variety of medical presentations across all ages as well as provide longer term care for my patients."

Dr Sumitomo said GP training in New England/Northwest has been a great learning opportunity.

"I feel fortunate to have been able to work at two great GP practices, the GP supervisors at both practices have been great role models and educators," he said.

"Whenever you need help, they are always just around the corner and are easily approachable. Working in Armidale and Inverell, I've enjoyed getting to know my patients and their families.

"I have found people are appreciative for the healthcare you provide and so it has been a rewarding journey," Dr Sumitomo said.

GP Synergy CEO, John Oldfield, congratulated Dr Sumitomo on his achievement.

"It is a pleasure for GP Synergy to recognise excellence and commitment in GP training," he said.

"With more than 60 registrars currently training in accredited general practices across New England/Northwest, Dr Sumitomo's achievement is certainly something to be proud of."
