As they did in the final of their home tournament two months ago, the USA got the better of the Aussies, winning the third place play-off 24-7.
Earlier in the day Australia fell in the semi-finals to Canada 12-26 in a tough, physical encounter that saw the North Americans get the better of the green and gold with a classy performance.
The Aussies had been undefeated through the pool stages, accounting for Fiji, Ireland and Spain before again defeating Spain in the quarter final.
In the third place play-off, the USA shot out to an early lead and pinned the women in the gold inside their half, that the Aussies were unable to gain back momentum within the match.
"We're disappointed not to be on the podium but there are plenty for us to take onboard for next week's tournament in Cape Town which we will work on," head coach John Manenti said.
"Next week will be history making with the first ever round of the Women's Series in South Africa and this squad is excited about bouncing back and putting their best foot forward next week."
