The Northern Inland Academy of Sport has confirmed a new approach towards their Inland Technology Tennis program for 2020. In previous years the focus has been on our leading tennis players. While this continues to be held with high importance for NIAS, there will also be a focus towards the younger-aged athletes starting the program.

Throughout 2020, NIAS will develop more exposure for our younger-aged tennis athletes. This will align with what is known as the FTEM model - a widely used framework in the sports industry that focuses on pathways from Foundation, Talent, Elite and Mastery levels. By providing an increase in exposure for our younger talent, this will play a key role in developing them towards becoming elite level athletes by the time they are in their mid-to-late teens.
This approach will see the talent identified athletes engaging in an extensive development program. The athletes in the tennis squad will engage in intensive and quality-assured training sessions in the hands of Tennis NSW and North West Tennis coaches.
The NIAS CEO James Cooper said, "This holistic approach means we appeal to regional tennis players from higher levels, and also those younger athletes with budding potential who benefit significantly from this early stage development".
Each of our players has been identified and were invited by the North West Tennis Committee to join the academy for 2020.
These athletes have been divided into separate divisions, namely Gold, Maroon or White. This structure will allow all players to develop through numerous tournaments over the course of the next 12 months.
It will also allow for certain athletes in the White division to play in Maroon division Tournaments when they have been identified as excelling in their own age level.
Each division has numerous tournaments and training sessions to attend throughout the year. The Gold and Maroon divisions will compete in more tournaments than the White Division and will travel as far north as Tweed Heads to compete. The White division will receive additional training days over the same duration.
