Deputy mayor Anthony Michael was on hand to see the six-metre tall trees lifted into position and says he's delighted to see the project nearing completion.

The trees are identical to those planted in Otho Street and are expected to grow to a height of 20 metres.

Plantings were moved forward due to Byron Street works tracking faster than expected.

"The Town Centre Renewal works are running three weeks ahead of schedule and the tree planting marks one of the final project milestones".

Cr Michael praised the work of council staff for taking on board lessons learned from the Otho Street works, enabling Byron Street improvements to be completed early.

"Planting in autumn provides these trees with the best possible conditions to get them established and also means our CBD can be fully accessible for delivery drivers, businesses and shoppers again.

"On behalf of council, I'd like to thank the Byron Street businesses for their patience," he said.

With the impact on businesses due to COVID-19, Cr Michael reminds residents many businesses in the CBD are still trading and he urges those who are well to shop local and social distancing protocols.

"While there will be some temporary changes to the way many of us do business, I urge residents to support their local business community."

Cr Michael also indicated Council will be working with the Chamber of Commerce to support businesses through the ensuing months, including offering opportunities for businesses to move to e-commerce and online sales.
