Inverell High School's Year 12 class of 2020 are holding a pumpkin guessing competition to raise much-needed funds for the Inverell Breast Cancer Support Group.
For just $2 a guess, the closest winner will take home two trailer loads of wood- something of great value at the moment to get you through the cold days!
What was going to be a prize-winning show pumpkin grown by Inverell High School's Ag department, was re-purposed to assist with fundraising.
"Inverell High School teacher Deb McCabe suggested students could use the pumpkin for a competition as their other fundraising ideas and events wont be able to go ahead with COVID-19," Inverell Breast Cancer Support Group president Trish Keightley said.
Situated at Elders, community members are being encouraged to head down, size up the pumpkin and take their best guess. There is also a guessing box located at the main office of the school.
After feeling the loss of a valuable staff member to cancer at Inverell High School last year, staff and students wanted to fund raise for the local group.
Mrs Keightley said in the last few months, the group has been called upon by 12 adults and one child battling cancer in Inverell.
"Our support doesn't stop but because of COVID fundraising money just isn't coming in like it usually is. It's the first time ever we've had to break the term deposit we've set up.
"We've had to cancel our luncheon which sometimes makes money from the raffle so the virus is having a snowballing effect," she said.
Inverell has been known to dig deep when times are tough and because events aren't able to be held, the pumpkin guessing competition is a great way to do just that.
Head down to Elders or Inverell High School throughout next week to have a guess or simply make a donation to help local people in need.
"We're still assisting people as much as we can during this time," she said.
The Inverell Breast Cancer Support Group provides support, comfort and friendship for local women, and children, who are dealing with cancer.
Through generous fundraisers held by the community, the group is also able to offer financial assistance to locals battling cancer and ongoing costs of treatment.
