Well aware the effects of the drought are far from over across regional NSW, GIVIT NSW Drought Support Officer, Melissa Bowman, will visit several Inverell-based charities on Wednesday.
"I'll be meeting with local charities to hear what the exact needs are in their communities. We'll then look to meet those needs with funds and items provided from our generous donors, who are aware of the struggles regional communities have been facing for the past few years," said Mrs Bowman.
"We might purchase vouchers for a community group to a local butcher or grocery store, school uniforms for a struggling family, or a heater for a couple doing it tough through the winter. It's up to local charities to tell us what's needed as they're on the ground and know their community best."
100% of donated funds GIVIT receives are used to purchase items for people in need. To donate or find more information about GIVIT's NSW Drought Relief Appeal, visit GIVIT.org.au/drought-relief.
"GIVIT looks to support local businesses wherever possible. Where there's a need that can be met by a local supplier, we spend donated funds in that town. This way we're not only supporting people in need, but also local businesses who are the beating heart of regional communities."
GIVIT has coordinated the donation of more than 140,000 items across drought-affected regions since August 2018. In NSW, GIVIT has supported 300 charities and community groups working with residents in drought-affected regions.
Mrs Bowman urged local charities and community groups to register with GIVIT to access and request items to help those in need due to ongoing drought conditions and the impact of COVID-19.
GIVIT is free, private and easy to use, and currently supports over 3,500 charities across Australia. If you are a local charity or service, please register at GIVIT.org.au/need-help/organisations.
