Swimmers at the Warialda Pool have enjoyed new amenities this summer, with Gwydir Shire Council completing a $71,458 state government-funded accessibility upgrade to the men's and women's toilet and shower blocks.
Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall recently inspected the improved change rooms, which have assisted to make the pool more user-friendly.
"Young or old, Warialda Swim Centre offers an aqua program for all levels of ability and now it has the amenities to match," Mr Marshall said.
"This grant has made the facility accessible to the entire community by installing a disabled toilet inside both the existing men's and women's change rooms.
"Alongside the toilet is a shower with adjustable nozzle, handrails and drop down shower seat.
"For those living with mobility issues these amenities provide the space and support required to get changed before classes like learn to swim and water aerobics.
"A roof has also been installed over the change rooms, providing much needed shade and cooling during the scorching Gwydir summer months.
"This project has brought the pool up to required accessibility standards and has made somewhere that can be enjoyed safely and comfortably by all."
This was the second SCCF grant for Warialda Pool, with $60,000 previously spent installing a solar heating system, heat blankets, rollers, and winch systems.
Mr Marshall said the addition of these heating systems has successfully extended the pool season from October to well into March.
"Previously when the pool opened at the end of spring the water temperature was a barmy 19 to 20 degrees.
"This new equipment has allowed it to be increased to between 24 to 25 degrees, with the water blankets helping maintain that temperature.
"Not only is being able to swim a great way to keep fit and healthy but it also saves lives. With the pool now open longer each season more kids than ever have the chance to dive in and learn this important skill."
