Inverell Police Acting Inspector Ross Chilcott believes finding the kelpie may be the key to finding Allan Anderson.
Mr Anderson, 65, was last seen on his Pindari Road property in Pindaroi on Wednesday morning with his canine companion.

New England and local police officers, Police Rescue Squad, PolAir, Police Dog Squad, SES, RFS, and Ambulance crews are continuing their extensive search on Friday, after searches on Thursday proved futile.

They've now also been joined by trail bike riders, drone operators and local volunteers pulling together to scour the area, in a case of "who don't we have" contributing to the search operation.
"If anyone finds a tan and black kelpie dog with a blue collar made named 'Bet', they can help us," Acting Inspector Chilcott told the Times.
The family hold grave concerns for Mr Anderson, as he suffers from a number of medical conditions.
Mr Anderson is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 170cm tall, of slim build, with balding, grey hair and blue/grey eyes.
Police are now urging anyone who may have seen him or his dog to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
