Their father Daniel, who was a police officer, died several years ago having battled post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after leaving the force, and the family soon became involved with Legacy.
The boys' mother, Mareika Wilkins, is a police sergeant in Inverell, and told the Leader the charity and the ride have had a profound impact on the family.
"When we went to it four years ago it was an experience where they were able to meet people who worked with their father," she said.
"Those people talked to them about the nice memories they had of the time they worked with their dad.
"And it was nice for the boys to see that the legacy of their father doesn't rest wholly and solely on their own shoulders."
Sergeant Wilkins said the organisation has also been there to help with times when her, or the boys, have felt down and needed extra support.
As a way of giving back to the organisation that has helped them so much, Sergeant Wilkins and her sons have become part of the annual Remembrance Bicycle Ride.
The event has typically seen participants ride from Sydney to Canberra, but due to COVID concerns and restrictions over the past couple of years, smaller trips have been set up in the local area.
A ride from Tamworth to Inverell is set to take place on August 28, and anyone is encouraged to come along and be part of the journey.
Sergeant Wilkins said it's an incredible experience and taking part allows people to understand Legacy's importance.
"This has touched not only us directly with the children and their father, but also we've got friends who have passed during policing while on duty," she said.
"It's one of those things when you're not aware of how much you need them till you do, and we want it to get out there specifically about raising as much money as we can.
"And to let people know they're such a great organisation that is always there for you, and they'll help you in so many different scenarios and help you with all these problems and they're just invaluable."
