Remy Smith has been chosen to be part of the North West tennis team, but the trip destined for Sydney has been postponed to the end of term four thanks to COVID lockdowns.

It would've been the 14-year-old's second time competing at the state level, and says it made her "pretty proud" to be chosen.

"It would've been really fun, but I can't wait to go," she enthused.

Remy picked up the racket after packing away her dance shoes, and nine years later has beaten most of the adult and advanced players at the Inverell club.

"I was sick of dancing, so I decided to try tennis and fell in love," she explained.

With the support of mum and dad, she played tournaments when they lived in Newcastle, and following a move to Bourke they made the effort to take her three hours away to the Far West Academy to continue her training.

Now in Inverell, she's been working hard to improve her game - getting ready for the Champion of Champions tournament which has been rescheduled for the end of the year - barring any further COVID restrictions.

"I love Ash Barty - and Roger Federer - I just admire their mental state, they keep it together and are so good at the mind games," she explained.

"That's something that ' I've had to work on, work through that, and I am getting better at not being nervous when I'm playing in tournaments."
