School representative council (SRC) president Monique Vickery, year 12, said students have decided to tackle the outward appearance of the school, and projects are underway to beautify the campus.
“We went around and identified parts of the school we want changed,” Monique said.
SRC secretary Tom Grant, year 9, said the students are meeting during sports time and after school to improve school garden.
Monique explained that like many Bundarra activities, the project was uniting the small town.
“Things like that are really good, because Bundarra is a small community and everyone is so close-knit.
“All the P&C and members of the community come and help. They’ll bring their trailers and we’ll get wood chips to put into the garden,” she said.
“Try to get the whole school involved if possible,” Tom added.
Another creative project is involving the school’s expressive talents.
Year 11 student Jacob Fitzpatrick has got the ball rolling.
“He’s really good at art. He’s designed big mural boards for us and we’ve got all the school involved in painting them,” Monique said.
Being members of the Bundarra SRC has been satisfying for both Monique and Tom.
SRC co-ordinator Louise McKinnon said networking with other SRC leaders at the regional and state SRC conferences is a good learning experience for students form a regional school.
“So that’s part’s really important for them as student leaders to see other motivated student leaders, too,” Ms McKinnon said.
Tom felt his role as a student leader was a good fit for his interests.
“I like leadership, and I picture myself as more of a leader. I would like this school to be improved and I think I’d be able to give something to the school,” he said.
Monique agreed.
“I like the thought of being able to help the other students. Just being some one to know they can come to if they have a problem and stuff. And just when you see a good change to the school, knowing that you’ve had influence on that,” she said.
“So being able to help encourage students and motivate them, so that they feel as though they’re part of the team, it’s just really good to make a difference.
