The annual show has run for over 50 years, and gallery supervisor, Jo Williams said the calibre of work for this major regional competition was very exciting.
“We’re thrilled with the entries this year. The exhibition just keeps getting better,” she said.
The show will be officially opened tomorrow night at 6.30pm by Member for Northern Tablelands, Adam Marshall. The presentation of prizes will commence around 7.30pm with awards for all genres, an open prize, local artist and young artist prizes, acquisition award and the special theme for this year: The Anzacs.
Career painter, AW ‘Bill’ Morton, is judging the competition this year. Now based In Toowoomba, Bill is not a stranger to Inverell and worked as an instructor with the Art Society in the mid-to late 1980s. Jo said Bill was a good choice for the job.
“Bill is an excellent judge and believes in the importance of technique.”
A special ‘Walk & Talk’ Sunday session is scheduled with the judge. Jo said he will guide visitors though the exhibition and share his perspectives on the pieces.
The Anzacs have attracted a good number of submissions, and pieces submitted include work crafted as floral art, mixed media with found objects, sculpture and painting.
Entry for the opening night is $15 per person with an operating bar. Please RSVP by this afternoon for catering purposes. The gallery will open this Sunday from 10am to 1pm, with the Walk & Talk with AW Morton scheduled around 10.30am. The fee for the gallery walk is by donation. The 2014 Inverell Art Society Competition remains on display until November 6.
