Club president James Smith said a dry track it was quite dangerous for the competitors and not good for spectators or the surrounding areas.
“Having it too dry, it gets skatey and dangerous, and it’s been something I’ve been trying to get the club to do for about six years now,” Smith said.
“Currently we use trucks to water it and it takes two or three days to water the track, and if it’s really dry it’s still not enough. When our dam’s empty we have to go right down to the river and cart water up.”
Smith said a good watering system for the track would save a lot of time and volunteer hours.
The full system will cost about $32,000, which includes the cost of a water pump worth about $10,000 that was factored into the original cost and has already been donated to the club. It leaves the club with $6000 to find, but Smith said he is confident it will be able to find the funds.
“We’ll work something out. We need heaps of other things, like a little tractor and that, but to get the watering system is the priority at this stage,” he said
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall was at the track to make the announcement, and said when the funding application came in he was able to put his two bobs’ worth in for what it was worth.
“The quality of the application was exceptional, but also the case that they have for the funding, to increase the safety on the track is the key thing, especially if you’re encouraging more junior into the club,” Marshall said.
“They’ve already got 150 members, so they’re quite a large motorsport club for a country area.”
