Isabelle was a competitor in the Athlete with Disability (AWD) multi-classification events, where each competitor’s results were converted to a percentage of the world record in each specific classification.
With the javelin at the Australian Athletics Championships in Brisbane, Hampton’s throw not only won her a bronze medal and a score of 71 per cent, it also qualified her for the World Championships in Qatar during October.
Hampton was thrilled about her performance with the javelin.
“I knew the qualifying distance and my throws had been going well,” Hampton said.
“When the distance was called by the officials, it was very exciting and I jumped in the air.”
Hampton’s 100 metres times had steadily improved during the season, and she managed to turn in a personal best at the national championships, which was 0.25 seconds off qualifying her for the world event too.
She finished sixth with 89 per cent in a tough field. Australia has many talented 100 metres sprinters across the AWD classifications, as was demonstrated when the winner broke the world record in her classification.
Hampton’s passion is not for the track though, it is for the field.
“My favourite event is the discus, and my results included fourth at the International Paralympic event in Brisbane, second in NSW Championships and fifth at Nationals,” she said.
Unfortunately discus and shot put are not included on the list of events that Hampton can represent Australia in.
Hampton said she will continue to train throughout winter for two Queensland events in July, and then wait in the hope she will be selected for the world championships.
She said the opportunity to represent Australia at the Paralympics in Rio in September 2016 is her goal for the 2015 /2016 summer season.
